How to Extend Your Tourist Visa Online in Colombia (2024 Guide)
Colombia is an easy country to stay in as a tourist, but if you’re planning to extend your trip beyond the initial 90-day tourist visa stamp issued upon arrival, you’ll need to know how to extend your visa. Well, technically it’s more of a tourist permit than a visa.
The Basics of the Colombian Tourist Visa / Permit
Most nationalities get a 90-day tourist visa / permit stamp on arrival (free of charge, except for some countries like Canada 🥹), and you can extend this once for an additional 90 days, giving you a total of 180 days in Colombia per calendar year. Keep in mind, this means your visa / permitresets every January, but you’ll need to leave the country before December ends and re-enter at the start of the new year.
✅ How to Extend Your Tourist Stamp Online in Colombia:
1. Documents Needed: Before starting, take a clear photo of:
- Your passport (personal info page)
- The passport page with your entry stamp to Colombia
2. Prepare Your Documents: Convert each photo into a PDF, label them accordingly, and compress them to less than 1 MB for successful uploading.
3. Access the Migración Colombia Website:
- Head to the Migración Colombia website. Click HERE for easy access.
- Do not translate the page—stick to the Spanish version to avoid any issues. If needed, copy and paste text into an online translator for help.
4. Visa / Permit Extension Type: Select Permiso Temporal de Permanencia para Prorrogar Permanencia.
5. City Selection for Faster Processing: Choose Pereira or another smaller city as your processing office for quicker service.
6. Filling Out the Form: Complete all required personal details. Make sure to enter your emergency contact.
7. Uploading Your Documents: After attaching your documents, ensure you click CARGAR to successfully upload them—simply clicking AGREGAR ARCHIVO won’t finalize the process.
💰 Colombia Tourist Visa / Permit Extension Fee:
The visa / stamp extension fee is typically between COP 100,000–200,000 ($25–50 USD), depending on the current government rates.
⏰ How Fast Does My Application Get Approved?
It typically takes 2 weeks to process. If you’re worried about your legal status since your stamp date is close to expiration, don’t stress. It’s important to remember that for as long as you applied before your expiration date, you should be fine.
If too much time has passed and you still haven’t gotten approved, go to the Migracion Office with a printed copy of your application so they can look into it.
🚨 WE HIGHLY DISCOURAGE YOU FROM OVERSTAYING 🚨
Sure, back in the day you could smile it off or luckily get through without paying a fine… but times are changing, my friend!
If you overstay your visa / permit, you’ll be hit with fines and possibly banned from re-entering Colombia. Make sure you keep track of your days and apply for an extension at least a week before your current visa / permit expires.
Not gonna lie, we have heard people pay hundreds, if not thousands of dollars as a fine. The immigration office has gone stricter these days, don’t play with fire (wink).
